Maun River Walk

Medal_edited.png

On the August 27th 2016 I walked the full length of the Maun River,

A walk of approximately 23 miles (37 Kilometres)

in aid of the Special Care Baby Unit at Kingsmill Hospital, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Maun River Challenge for the NHS

The spread of the coronavirus pandemic around the world is one of the most significant events of our lifetime. On the frontlines of this crisis is our National Health Service (NHS). From doctors and nurses, to administrators and cleaning staff, these essential workers are helping people with and without the virus at the same and also working long and very busy hours through this testing time

To raise funds for our NHS on the second anniversary, on Friday 4th March I walked from the source of the Maun River (between Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield) to its end near Markham Moor (A1) where it joins the River Meden,

shortly before the start of the River Idle, then walking back to

Kingsmill reservoir and then finishing by walking to Kingsmill Hospital

(Sutton-in-Ashfield) a total of 50.5 miles, a total of 145102 steps

(one step to remember each person that has died of COVID-19)

as the NHS doesn't stop so I walked this in

about 20 hours 10 minutes.

Started at 9pm Friday though the was very nice not cold, 5.5c - 7c, very light breeze and no rain.

Quite pleasant all night. Only thing was when I got to Whitewater lane bridge (just after Ollerton) there was a bit of flooding, which didn't look that bad until I stepped on what looked like good grow and then I found it was deeper then my boot🥴 I managed to get onto the bridge on carry on but by then I had wet feet (I did find somewhere to change my socks😂) the rest of the way to the A1 (west Drayton) was uneventful.
Had my breakfast just after dawn at Mc's and headed back. By this time the wind was then a light wind and a little cooler.
When I back to Whitewater lane bridge I decided not to go paddling again and so had to find another path, walked down the road to what looked like a path on my sat nav, only to find it a privet only farmer lane (I don't go down private what ever time of day) and had to walk all the way back past whitewater lane bridge and go around through New Ollerton. Trying to get back onto you route when they are clearing for a new housing estate being built is not easy, fencing all around with not signs to tell you that the path your walking down is a dead end 🙁 but after a seemed a big extension to my route I did get back onto my route. By this time the wind was getting a little cooler and had the od light rain. By the time I got to Mansfield I was feel it in my feet and legs but was still fine ish. As I got to Field Mill Pond a friend from work found me and we walk together to Kingsmill Reservoir where my Son and Mother was waiting for me. My Son and I walk around the Res and up to Kingsmill together to the finish. 🎉🎊 Here my Mother and Daughter were waiting, wasn't expecting my Daughter to be there as she was working but thankfully she finished early and could give my a lift home 👍🏻

After getting home yes the pain and cramps hit, o boy did they hit. Managed to have a shower something to eat and then fell asleep for a few hours 😴

Total distance 50.5miles
Total time 20 hour 10 minutes
